Hello everyone! How are you?
At this moment we will learn some
idiom in English. Do you have a favorite idiom or some expression? Most of us
do, don’t we? But when we want to say some indonesian idiom by english don’t
translete it like what we usual say in Indonesian language. Because english is
different with our own language. So be careful when you translete because
direct translation are not always correct or meaningful. It may sound unnatural
and cause confusion and sometimes laughter.
Here are some idioms that we
often to say :
1. Kasian
deh lo...... “Pity you” (with a smile) x(wrong)
In english this
idiom doesn’t make sense, for the correct we can say “What
a shame”, “Poor You” or “That’s pity”
2. Seperti
yang kita ketahui...... “As we all know” x (wrong)
In english as we
all know is not often used. It can be used when the speaker really does know
that the people he is adressing actually do know that information they are
about to be told
3. Tolong
buka (lepas) sepatunya....... “Please open your shoes”
x(wrong)
The correct one
is “Please take off your shoes”
4. Saya
suka warna biru.............. “I like blue colour”
x(wrong)
I like blue
5. Polisi
tidur....... Sleeping Policemen
“Speed bumps”
The other problem we find when we
translete English to Indonesian. Look at these examples:
1. I
like basketball ......... “Saya seperti bola basket”
The correct is “Saya suka bola basket”
2. Please
write back....... “Tolong menulis punggung”
“Tolong dibalas”
3. Good
Luck.......... “Selamat beruntung”
“Semoga berhasil/Semoga beruntung”
So be careful, direct translation
doesn’t always work. You have to consult to your teacher or the native
speakers. You also have to read more and more if you want to translete
something directly.
